Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of the heartburn drug Nexium to patients taking long-term proton pump inhibitors for heartburn. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by preventing acid from being produced in the stomach. The generic version is called esomeprazole magnesium, or GERDEX.
The FDA has approved the generic version of Nexium for short-term use in people who have severe heartburn.
The approved generic version of Nexium is available in the U. only as a 50-count bottle of 30 tablets, with the 30-count bottle containing the generic version of Nexium. The generic is also available in other generic forms, including a 40-count bottle of 30 tablets, and a 20-count bottle of 40 tablets.
This FDA approval allows the generic to be prescribed only under the supervision of a licensed health care professional. The generic may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Nexium and other PPIs may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate. Nitrates can lead to serious heartburn and other health problems. Taking PPIs with a nitrate may cause a serious drop in blood pressure.
